July 1999 to Present

Drilling Manager for rig IR-900-II; a land rig with a depth rating of 3300 meters. In this capacity the writer has been responsible for imparting practical training (in the field) to more than 120 graduate drilling and mechanical engineers. The depth of the wells being drilled varies from 1300 to 2100 meters. For the last three years this rig has been the most productive one in the field having broken the drilling records of the past decade. The writer has been instrumental in motivating the entire rig crew to work safely and adopt safe operating procedures. All phases of the operation, rig moves, transportation, completion and testing jobs are carried out under the direct supervision and guidance of the writer to achieve superior performance at a reduced cost.

End of well reports covering the entire operation including detailed BHA and Bit Records and Post Mortems on problems, if any, are prepared by the writer and submitted to management.

At present the company are in the process of implementing ISO-9001:2000 Safety Procedures. The writer serves in the capacity of Installation Manager for the implementation of these procedures. As such he is responsible for the production of detailed reports on accident related lost time incidents together with analyses of what transpired and submission of said reports to management.

July 1997 to June 1999

The writer was put in charge of Materials Planning and Procurement for the Drilling Section of the Mehasana Project, attending to the materials needs for 7 rigs. During that period he learned complete and effective financial and budgeting procedures and became proficient the the preparation of AFE's. At no time during his tenure was there any down time because of insufficient materials at the well sites.

June 1995 to June 1997

Rig coordinator and supervisor for three charter-hired deep drilling onshore rigs for Hi-Tech, HEG-Bhilwara and Triveni-Pool International. The job consisted of supervising and coordinating all operations and reporting to ONGC's General Drilling Manager. Contract provisions were followed closely in minute detail and the drilling operations were successfully carried out. During this period the writer collaborated closely with Baker-Hughes Inteq personnel for the drilling of horizontal wells, looking after all of the technical details and consulting with the General Manager of Drilling. Three of the horizontal wells had an offset of 300 to 500 meters and were completed with screen liners.

Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd., Eastern Region, Sibsagar, Assam.

April 1991 to May 1995

Promoted to Executive Drilling Engineer and transferred to Sibsagar Oil and Gas Field in the Eastern Region of Assam, the writer was assigned to deep drilling onshore rig E-1400-2 which was working in the Lakwa Project. After one year the writer was given the charge of looking after 13 deep drilling rigs in the Lakwa Field. The basic assignment was the daily monitoring of drilling operations and coordinating operations with Drilling Managers, Tool Pushers and Field Maintenance Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Other operations coordinated included Logging, Cementing, Completing and Testing, Directional Drilling Services, Mud Engineering and Transportation. Additional duties consisted of monitoring manpower movements and arranging daily technical meetings with an eye to improving drilling efficiency and fulfilling drilling targets and MOU of the Indian Government. Drilling programmes were written and safety audits and technical compliance audits were also undertaken.

September 1990 to March 1991

Returned to Project Headquarters in Madras to work directly below the General Manager of Drilling in the, at that time, newly formed Project Technology Group (PTG). The main thrust of this position was to review drilling programmes and interact with geologists, mud engineers, civil engineers, production engineers reservoir engineers and other related groups with a view toward optimizing drilling operations. The writer also prepared BHA and Casing Designs and effected appropriate Drilling Bit Selection. During this time a study was undertaken which resulted in the elimination of setting false conductor pipe and the short landing of conductor pipe thus gaining considerable savings on the overall operation.

August 1985 to August 1990

The writer joined ONGC Ltd. in the capacity of Driller as a result of campus recruitment on 30 August 1985. Initially he was posted to the Technical Section of the Cauvery Oil and Gas Field in Madras for training. Thereafter he assumed the duties of Driller on the onshore deep drilling rig F-6100; in the Cauvery Oil and Gas Field drilling exploration wells.

The depth of the wells drilled varied between 4900 and 5100 meters. The policy was to set four strings of casing on each well. The BOP was rated at 10,000 psi. The writer became proficient in the duties of Derrick Man and Driller during this period, working on a 14 days on/14 days off schedule.
